The New South Wales East Coast is a hiker’s dream. With so many trails and views to choose from, which are the best walks to do? With flora and fauna for miles and plenty of lighthouses to take your pick from we’ve narrowed down our favourite hikes in NSW to add to the itinerary on your next trip.
Mt Yacaaba Walking Track
Located in Hawks Nest and Myall Lakes National Park, Mt Yacaaba Walking Track gets the heart rate rising in a challenging ascent to the top of the mountain.
Starting at Hawks Nest’s Bennett Beach, the 7km return loop offers breathtaking views over Port Stephens and Myall Lakes. Wear your hiking boots for the climb as it gets rocky and steep in some parts before reaching an opening where you can take in the scenery worth the hike.
On a clear day you can see all the ridgeline of Barrington Tops and the coast line of Seal Rocks, as well as the chance to glimpse and admire the clear blue bay of Nelson Bay.
Finish the hike at nearby Jimmys Beach Reserve, where you’ll also find Reflections Jimmys Beach. Set up camp in your tent, satisfy your coastal cabin fever with a luxury villa, or get glamping and enjoy the creature comforts of home in our deluxe beach tents.
Look at Me Now Headland Walk
Located at Moonee Beach Nature Reserve, Look at Me Now Headland Walk is a short and easy route that captures the best of what nature has to offer on the Coffs Coast.
The walk is paved and perfect for the whole family and a short return means you can continue your stroll on the nearby Dammerel’s History Walk for a longer route.
The local kangaroos love this spot year long, and the wide-open spaces make for the perfect whale watching destinations throughout winter. The easy loop is a great leisurely stroll and located on important Aboriginal land. This spot is also perfect for a lunch break, so pack a picnic and take in the best of the best of the Coffs Coast region.
Just 10 minutes away you’ll find Reflections Moonee Beach where the creek meets the beach. This holiday park is perfect for a Coffs getaway – 10 minutes from town, a playground on site as well as local shops, Moonee is perfect for those look for a place to relax or get going out in the surf. Both cabins and camping or caravanning sites are located at this Reflections site, so there’s something to suit everyone for their stay.
Byron Lighthouse Walk
Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk is one of the most picturesque and popular hikes in coastal Northern NSW. Hikers will want 2 hours for this 3.7km loop to allow time to enjoy every step and explore the lighthouse.
Start near local hotspot “The Pass” and make your way towards Wategos Beach. The sheltered beach is the perfect stop for a paddle and play before tackling the steep stairs towards the lighthouse.
You can take a small detour on the way up the lighthouse via Little Wategos Track, where you can get a panoramic view of the Wategos and the lighthouse.
The Byron Bay Lighthouse is located at the most easterly point of Australia where you’ll get to glance at the most iconic views on the east coast. The round trip will have you turning your head left and right as nature shows off with turtles, dolphins and birds in one of the most popular holiday destinations in Australia.
Reflections Holiday Park Byron Bay is located just down the road on the beach front while also just being a stone’s throw away from the town centre. Kick back on the beach or bring your push bike and peddle to a café near by to enjoy the best of what the Far-North Coast has to offer.
